PORTRAIT: Matt Colborne

I was excited to kick off the new year with a fun portrait session on a perfectly sunny Winter afternoon. Our subject, Matt, needed some new portraits to kick start his portfolio, so we headed to a cool little area behind the Old Steine. I’ve done a few band shoots at the same location, but I hadn’t ever done an individual portrait session there, so there were a few different areas to explore.

We started off using natural light, then as the sun started to lower I grabbed a speedlight to illuminate Matt whilst capturing the sun setting in the background. It was a busy Sunday afternoon so we had to work around pedestrians and vehicles, but I think we managed to avoid getting in anyone’s way!

LIVE: Çigdem Aslan

Here are a few photos from Çigdem Aslan‘s live show at the Brighton Dome Studio Theatre. I was photographing for world music blog Rhythm Passport and was lucky enough to have 10 minutes with Çigdem before the show started to do a quick portrait session to go alongside an interview piece.

It was one of the first shows of the tour and although Çigdem seemed a little nervous about our shoot, she looked glamorous in her floor length gown (“I found it at a charity shop!”) and didn’t mind me asking her to clamber over the venue’s tiered seating to get the shot. We were soon giggling as we tried out different poses, but I love this main shot with Çigdem’s red shoes peeping out under the hem of her dress.

LIVE: Tinie Tempah

On Monday night, I was photographing Tinie Tempah at the Brighton Centre. One of the things I love about shooting at bigger venues like the Brighton Centre is that every show varies so much. The staging, set design and lighting can be completely different from one show to the next. Tinie Tempah started the show twenty feet above the main stage on a huge structure – admittedly that’s not great for a photographer when already battling a 5-6ft difference when shooting someone on the main stage, but it looked awesome!

Here’s a few of my favourite photographs from the show! Shot on a D3s with 24-70 2.8.
